Dear Friend,

It’s official! DC’s budget will end chronic homelessness for 615 individuals and 180 families. It also fully funds DC’s homeless Street Outreach Network, a critical tool for connecting some of our most vulnerable neighbors to housing and services.

While we had shared with you this almost official news a few weeks ago, the DC Council voted yesterday to approve their fiscal year 2020 budget, officially sealing the deal.

This budget is a monumental one for ending long-term homelessness for our neighbors. Not only does it invest $16.5 million to end chronic homelessness for 795 households, this budget is also important because it is one in which the DC Council:

  • allocated more units of Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) than have ever been allocated in a single fiscal year; and
  • prioritized urgent housing needs over tax breaks for businesses by diverting funds from a tax incentive and instead investing in PSH and homeless street outreach (among other priorities).

We are so proud of our team, The Way Home Campaign, and our many individual and organizational partners, without whom none of this would have been possible!

This budget season was an important step towards achieving our mission. Thanks to our collective advocacy, nearly 800 households will no longer be denied the dignity of a home.

We hope you will join us for a celebration with The Way Home Campaign on Wednesday, June 12th!

Thank you for your continued support of Miriam’s Kitchen and our mission to truly end long term homelessness in the District.

In gratitude,

Lara Pukatch

Director of Advocacy

  • A clear indicator of why this recently funded street outreach is so crucial, our own Ger Skerrett was quoted in this article from DCist about yesterday's heat emergency in the District! Read more to learn about how you can help your neighbor struggling in the heat this summer.
