How To Show Your Employer You're Ready For A Promotion

You may have been in your job a while or perhaps are looking for a new role within the same company. No matter what it is, if you find that you’re always wondering when you’re going to get bumped up in a promotion, you do something about it.

Instead of just hoping for the best, or that your appraisal will come around sometime soon, you need to be proactive and do what you can to tick off those steps that will help you climb the career ladder. A promotion can mean you receive a higher salary, more responsibility and a different job role that might have more to it, and you want the benefits that all this brings. In this article, we take a look at how you can show your employer you’re ready for a promotion.

Always put your all into everything you do

One of the first things employers need to know is that you put your all into everything you do. Whether you’re a scaffolder who always does their job with utter precision (remember if you get hurt at work doing this, to look into compensation guidance for scaffold-related construction injuries) or if you’re a social media manager that’s on top of your game, you need to continue doing this. If you find you’ve been putting in the bare minimum or just doing what you can to scrape by, this will need to change. Going above and beyond is a sure fire way of getting yourself noticed by your manager, particularly if you have happy clients and your numbers are reflective of all the hard work you are putting in.

Ensure you show yourself as a team player

While being a hard worker is one big aspect that can earn you a promotion, you also need to show that you are a team player and happy to work with others. You might take the flak from someone who is sick, or go out of your way to help others when they need it during the day. No matter what it is, this is a brilliant method to integrate yourself firmly into the company and show you have a great character. Don’t just work well with others inside office hours, also attend things that are thrown by your employer such as a work outing or drinks. This can help show you’re willing to put in outside time to get to know everyone better.

Don’t be afraid to ask what’s needed of you

The saying goes that if you don’t ask you don’t get, so if you’re wondering just what needs to be done in order to get promoted, go in there and find out. You could see if there are certain criteria which need to be met, such as hitting a specific number of sales, making a certain amount of house fixes, or something similar. Perhaps there are training courses you need to be enrolled on, or maybe something else. Once you know, you’ll have a clear goal in mind that you can aim for.

Find ways you can improve at the work you do

If you are doing okay but not amazing, this can hinder your chances at getting promoted. We recommend looking into the tools that are available to you or on the market that can help you do your job better. Utilise things such as AI, or put forward suggestions to your boss of how the company can be more efficient or save money. This innovation and ability to be forefront about your ideas can really help you get noticed by those that matter most. When this occurs, you will be well on track to getting that promotion you so rightly deserve and want.

These are just a few things you can do to help your employer see you’re ready for a promotion. Whether you go and speak to them face to face to find out what is needed in order for you to get to that next step, or if you put in the graft and work with your team until it happens, the tactic you choose is entirely up to you. Ensure that whatever you select, that you do it properly and put in your all. What are some top tips you have that show your employers you are ready for a promotion? Is there anything in particular that you’ve done in the past which has helped? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you and know what’s worked!
