Silent Night in Hawaiian

I grew up singing Silent Night in Hawaiian growing up. I lived on O'ahu from 1976-1988 and then a few times after that. But it was as a Public School elementary school kid at Aliamanu Elementary school and then from 7th-12th grade at Saint Louis School where we always would sing po la`i e, po kamaha`o instead of silent night, holy night. I've also lived in Germany and learned that this haunting, beautiful song was penned in German and put to music by Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber in Oberndorf, Austria, in 1818. Very interesting indeed. So, I included the original German as well, which is stille Nacht, heilige Nacht. Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

Ka lama la`i mai luna mai

Direct Translation

Peaceful night, wonderful night,
Peace, light
The beloved mother
With the holy child
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Peaceful night, wonderful night,
The shepherds come
With the heaven's beauty
The angels sing hallelujah.
Christ the Lord is born.
Christ the Lord is born.

Peaceful night, wonderful night,
Beloved sacred child,
Light of peace from above
With goodwill and purity.
Jesus for your birth.
Jesus for your birth.

Silent Night in English

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
'Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, oh, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth

Silent Night in Original German

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Halleluja,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah:
Christ, der Retter ist da!
Christ, der Retter ist da!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb’ aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund’.
Christ, in deiner Geburt!
Christ, in deiner Geburt!

Literal Translation

Silent night, holy night
All is sleeping, alone watches
Only the close, most holy couple.
Blessed boy in curly hair,
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Sleep in heavenly peace!

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds just informed
By the angels’ hallelujah,
It rings out far and wide:
Christ the Savior is here!
Christ the Savior is here!

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, oh how laughs
Love out of your divine mouth,
For now the hour of salvation strikes for us.
Christ, in Thy birth!
Christ, in Thy birth!

Silent Night Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria
