I just received the below email in my Facebook Inbox because I am a member of the ooVoo Facebook Group. Well, I have been sitting on some cool news that I assume I can share now since it has been released into the wilderness. Lots of cool stuff: My ooVoo Day, a version of ooVoo for the Mac, and the ability to chat up some of the coolest new media, social media, new PR, new marketing, and rock star bloggers anywhere! ooVoo, a video communication company, is sponsoring a first-of-its-kind web event called “My ooVoo Day With…” in which 23 bloggers and podcasters from a variety of different industries and interest groups will host their communities in multi-user online video chats.
All sessions will take place between February 10th and February 21st.
Hosts have set aside a number of time slots when they are available to meet and chat face-to-face with their readers via ooVoo; they’ll be able to host up to 5 guests via video conferencing per session.

What Makes ooVoo Special and Unique

Some of the coolest, most innovative features about ooVoo are not the most heralded. The thing ooVoo leads with is the six-person video chat that takes up almost no bandwith based on a special new technology. However, Web Workers Daily really gets why ooVoo is surely cool, even if you don’t consider the five-plus-oneself video and audio chat:

“You can also record and send video messages, even to recipients who are not ooVoo users. In a nice touch, they’ve leveraged their infrastructure for this to allow ooVoo to serve as a general file sending mechanism: up to 20 files at a time, each up to 25MB, which is nice if you’re stuck with email that throttles you down to unreasonably small attachment sizes. There are various other bells and whistles like click-to-call “ooVoo Me” links for your blog and importing contacts from your address book, but the video conferencing and video mail features are the clear core.” Via Web Workers Daily

War and Pornography

No, not war on pornography, but war and pornography as the two biggest engines for technological and logistical innovation the world has ever seen.

I was at Zack’s the other night and I was talking to a recovering lawyer about how Internet innovation was led by porn.

To paraphrase, the only thing that could keep someone sitting on a slow connection waiting for a choppy postage stamp-sized movie to load in the age of dialup was porn.

It was exactly not video phone or video conferencing.

That same is true with the adoption of the consumer video tape and player, the commercialization of photography, the widespread adoption of color printing, the distribution of magazines and periodicals. The list goes on.

Makes me doubt the official stories of the telephone (phone sex?) and the Gutenberg printing press (the Holy Bible, please).

All the rest of technological innovation can be directly attributed to winning the arms race, even if it is hidden behind the guise of science, advancement, medicine, learning, progress, or what have you.

And both war and pornography have something else in common: they are both obscene. They corrupt even the most enlightened of cultures. We are human and have an id. Well, I do, anyway. Don’t tell my mum.
