2009 so far has been a great year for me. The biggest news is that this week we pulled back the curtain on the new web site for The Advance Guard. We’d been working on it for a while now and as you’ll see we wanted to take a bit of a different approach then many do. We wanted photography to play a big role in the site an we wrote the case stories as if they were appearing in a magazine. The site will continue to grow and evolve and I’m looking forward to people’s comments and feedback on it.

@Todd Jordan — thanks. I have been thinking about being 20-something in 2008 and I think sarcastic is out and earnest is in. Agencies don’t get it. Their art directors are Seinfeld-era and don’t realize that teens and 20-something are serious. And I think BBDO and PepsiCo are assuming the story won’t leave this medium. I am told that the OJ verdict is going to kill this story on MSM.

CC Chapman knows Bonin and likes him. He’s for real. Here’s another thing about social media and social networks… blowback comes as a result of “who the hell are you.”

If you don’t spend enough time building brand and connection — “Ah, I know you!” — then when Bonin Bough comes to my INBOX, I assume sneakiness, right?

I am being kind to Bonin because I have my own firm and work in the social media PR space, http://chrisabraham.com — this means that I understand how risky and bold PepsiCo’s response was.

Matt and I wondered at the fact that BBDO could be so pre-Internet with their risk-assessment while their Social Media Response Team (is it Edelman?) is so good.

Mind you, the moment I got to Bonin’s “My best friend committed suicide and this is a topic very close to my heart” I balked and considered that sort of admission, from someone I don’t even know, to sound either tacky (at the very least), inappropriate, or just pandering…

As a PR professional, we highly — strongly — no, forcefully recommend always responding to this thing with Mea Maxima Culpa — never engage this sort of thing in any space, really. “If you struggle, you’ll only make it worse; and, if you say nothing, it will be even worse than that” is what I say.

I am a Twitter Addict, I have to admit, and it is for many reasons! Why?  Well, because Twitter is an important and immediate connection I have to both my friends and colleagues, from anywhere and any time. And, Twitter is also an oracle to me! When I have a question or need advice or a recommendation, I just “ask Twitter,” tapping my 1,304 followers for their experience, hope, and joy. Well, another reason I love Twitter is because of their “promiscuous” API, which drives innovation. One such innovation is the Twittering Teddy, which is the brain “child” of the gang over at The Advance Guard, Steve Coulson and C.C. Chapman, et al, on behalf of the gang over at My Home 2.0.

I just spent some time setting up my own CokeTag for my Facebook Profile after hearing about it from CC Chapman.

What I like about it is that it isn’t nefarious. One just sets it up to reflect one’s interested, passions, properties, and there you go! There’s a lot of fun there because you can set up the CokeTag to reflect who you are, instead of just biting everyone and sucking their blood. So, I chose to reflect myself through my favorite TV shows, movies, sites I own, sports I do, and my favorite foodie sites. Then, after you install the CokeTag application, set it up, and so forth, you can start grabbing other people’s CokeTag or you can even check out who is checking you out via the Click Tracker. At the end of the day, I don’t have the vision for the CokeTag application; however, CC does and so here’s what his vision is,

CC Chapman blogged about the Life Changing Box, my mysterious client’s client, and I love being able to tease CC about it! And, like I always say, loose lips sink ships! (I know something you don’t know! Ha ha!)

Life Changing Box

I got a note from a friend pointing me to LifeChangingBox.com . No details. No hints. Just the URL to go and check it out. Since I knew this person I figured why not.

I spent some time putting words into it and seeing what it did. I don’t want to spoil the surprise but go ahead and give it a try. When you give it a word that the box likes it reacts positively to it. I’m still haven’t figured out if there are any key words that will make it go really nuts or not and what the end goal of the site is, but it is a fun for a nice break. One warning though is that the site loads with sounds so don’t have your speakers to loud. You can turn it off in the upper right hand corner.

What I have determined is that it is tied to a Facebook application as well where you can win prizes by holding the box. I had the box for a while, but didn’t win anything. As you can see below, you can go in every day and “touch” boxes that other people are holding in the hopes that when the box changes holders you’ll get it next. Sort of like an inverted, twisted game of duck duck goose if you ask me.

Word on the street is that this is tied to a television company, but I’m not getting any real answers from anyone I ask so I’m not sure. I did see a TV in one of the promo shots as a prize so who knows.

If you try it out and find anything cool that makes the box do things let me know. If you win a prize I REALLY want to know because I am curious to see what sorts of things it gives out.

Not sure this is “life changing” but it is certainly fun to play with.

Well, I know that my last post was all about CC Chapman. Well, I went and actually looked at the lineup for the American Eagle New American Music Union music festival and guess what: Bob Dylan. The way I see it, no matter what you think about Dylan, he’s Dylan! Obviously, Bob Dylan is a genius and a majority-stakeholder in pop- and folk-music history. I was just on IM and I was talking about the gig and the guy I was talking to didn’t know much about Dylan and wasn’t really into his sound. I saw Dylan at the Meadowlands in NJ in the late 80s and I couldn’t understand a word he sang — no matter! Here’s my quote from the IM: “I mean, let’s say Jesus had a nasal whine, he is still Christ!” The same thing can be said about Bob Dylan. And, who else is visiting Pittsburgh in August? Bob Dylan and His Band, The Raconteurs, The Roots, Gnarls Barkley (of Crazy fame — and the man’s entire album is inspired), Spoon, The Black Keys, Tiny Masters of Today, NASA, Black Mountain, and The Duke Spirit. I will definitely make a detour en route to San Diego, that’s for sure.

I am a proud Homefry. CC Chapman is a visionary and a brilliant social media maven. He is also a friend of mine and a fine marketing professional. He actually made me jealous that I was not as SXSW and he makes the nicest Social Media News Releases in the business (none call it jealousy). Well, since I totally missed out the last time, at SXSW, I am keen to see whether I will be in the US — and close to Pittsburgh — so that I can make it to the American Eagle New American Music Union music festival. AE is the sexy-as-hell client of CC’s social media PR and marketing firm, The Advance Guard. Yes, I shouldn’t be pimping TAG, right, because they’re our competition, you might say, right? Well, that’s not how Social Media works! CC and I are not even frenemies, we’re mates. One’s responsibility is to be the guarantor of your friends’ success. Actually, August 8 and 9 might work for me because I need to be at a wedding in San Diego on August 16th, so I am sure I can come back early to make the The New American Music Union!

I love CC Chapman but man he’s one hell of a compelling promoter. Thing is with CC, he always gives way more than he takes.  Sure, this is a promotion for mDialog, but then again, it is a total value-add, too, offering super exclusives for the denizens of SXSW, which is itself the home of the most techie, geeky, creative, connected, early-adopters on the face of the earth. There are gifts aplenty, all on the back of mDialog’s service! Brilliant!  Here’s CC over at SXSW for Newbies. I love trivia games. I also love pool and drinking beer. Well, these three vices came together in a perfect storm with Zack’s Bar. Sadly, Zack’s closed and I am now old. For me, in my late 30s, hanging out in bars is downright pathetic. And I hate the smoke, and those days are over. I have not cast my shadow on Bar Trivia kiosks in years. And since I don’t yet speak German, even if I went out to bars in Berlin, I would lose all the trivia games: wrong culture and wrong language.
