The above picture is taken in the first bay at <a
href="http://www.taalignment.com/">T&amp;A Alignment</a>, owner Bob Collins.</p><p>Here&#8217;s the deal that I wrote down to post onto the BMW enthusiast forum, Bimmerfest, <a
id="thread_title_555958" href="http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=555958&amp;highlight=">Overheat to Red and then Fail During Idle and Crack in Radiator Coolant Overflow Tank</a>:</p><blockquote><p>Of course I am already freaked out that this is a cracked <a
class="zem_slink" title="Cylinder head" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_head" rel="wikipedia">cylinder head</a> but let me just post what happened.  I am driving through Nebraska and got a call so instead of staying in the restaurant and taking the call, I jumped into the car and idled and had the AC running for 20 minutes in the noonday heat.  I noticed the AC was off and just the blower/fan and then noticed the temp was not in the middle, like always, but in the red, with the light on. All the way in the red. Instead of turning the car off, I started driving to get some air in it and it got worse, so I stopped the car, opened the hood, and there was coolant all over the inside of the hood/bonnet. The temp gauge went all the way to hot and turned off, actually. And stayed all the way right.  I had a rural mechanic come over and look at it and it had cooled but there was no coolant in the reservoir.  I drove 1/2 mile to the garage and their first diagnosis is a crack in the Radiator Coolant Overflow Tank, which I will replace, so they can do the test to see if it is, in fact, just that crack or if the pressure backup from a cracked cylinder head.  What is your intuition.  I know that I should not have been idling in 100F heat in the car with the AC on &#8212; and I also know that I should have turned the car OFF when I saw the overheat and left it there for at least 1/2 hour.  But I didn&#8217;t.  But I will do from now on.  What does your intuition say? Replace the Radiator Coolant Overflow Tank or the whole engine?</p></blockquote><p>They&#8217;re going to check a couple things to make sure there&#8217;s structural damage to the engine &#8212; a real possibility &#8212; or if replacing the cracked Radiator Coolant Overflow Tank with the one that I ordered and had drop-shipped from <a

class="zem_slink" title="Straight-six engine" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight-six_engine">inline six</a> motor.</p><p>The complaint is based on the two numbers after the series number of each car. For example, in the past, a 750i had a 5 Liter engine, a <a
class="zem_slink" title="BMW 3 Series" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_Series">328i</a> had a 2.8 Liter engine, and the 318i had a 1.8 Liter engine. The <a
class="zem_slink" title="Engine displacement" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_displacement">engine displacement</a> has always been kept in the two numbers after the 3, 5, or 7 Series number.</p><p>Now, as we test drove a 2011 BMW 740Li and a 750Li I discovered that the 2011 528i has my car&#8217;s engine, a 3-Liter inline-6, and is just sporting the 28 &#8220;out of tradition.&#8221; What? What&#8217;s more, the 740Li sports a <a
class="zem_slink" title="Twin-turbo" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin-turbo">twin-turbo</a> 3 Liter 6, not a 4-Liter, and the 750Li sports a 4-Liter 8 and not a 5-Liter!  Even more, the 2011 BMW 335i is a 3-Liter inline-six with a twin-turbo and not a 3.5 Liter engined car.</p><p>The first thing the dealer did when we shot off in the 740LI was, &#8220;doesn&#8217;t feel like a six, does it?&#8221;  The tail doesn&#8217;t at all designate that the traditionally and historically <a
class="zem_slink" title="Naturally-aspirated engine" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturally-aspirated_engine">naturally-aspirated</a> award-winning BMW engines are now often turbo and twin-turbo-assisted, though this is not represented in the new alpha-numeric nomenclature.  Since &#8220;i&#8221; means fuel-injected and &#8220;x&#8221; means all-wheel-drive and &#8220;L&#8221; means long-wheelbase, shouldn&#8217;t &#8220;t&#8221; mean turbo or &#8220;b&#8221; mean biturbo?</p><p>Am I silly or are you as appalled as I am?</p><div

href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/25/spy-shots-2011-bmw-5-series/">sans-camouflage</a> observation says it looks much like the <a
href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/5+series+gt">5 Series GT</a>, its close sibling (nobody was expecting any radical styling departure anyway). Thanks to its &#8220;sport sedan&#8221; role, the new 5 Series four-door sports a slightly more aggressive flair to its front facade and side styling.</div><div></div><div>In case you were wondering, the little black buttons just ahead of the front wheels are side view cameras, just like those found on the <a

One of the tires was brand new from a flat but the other three were pretty much bald. Nice rubber for a nice ride. They did a good job and I got to catch up on all of my 4&#215;4 and sports car mags. My mom rolls in my <a

It is rumored that the test drivers of the E34   M5 could determine who or what team made each specific M5, due to characteristic   quirks of the handbuilt nature of the E34 M5. The engines were also built by   hand by BMW M technicians. All of the E34 M5 powerplants were built to 5% of   advertised output.</p><p>The early E34 M5 used an evolution of the 24-valve I6 found in the E28 M5 and   E24 M635CSi/M6. Designated <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_S38" title="BMW S38">S38B36</a>,   the engine technically remains a 3.5 L, with a bore of 93.4 mm and stroke of   86 mm for a total capacity of 3535 cc. The added stroke is due to a new forged   steel crankshaft, though the camshafts were also changed. Compression was up   slightly (10:1 versus 9.8:1). Other adjustments made included an electronically   controlled butterfly valve in the intake plenum which provided better low rpm   and mid-range power. The engine also featured an improved flywheel, <a

href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I6" title="I6">I6</a> engine   called the <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_S38" title="BMW S38">S38B36</a>. Originally it had   a <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_displacement" title="Engine displacement">displacement</a> of 3.6 L and produced 315 hp   (235 kW), and 266 lb·ft @ 4750 RPM. Cars sold in North America and <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland" title="Switzerland">Switzerland</a> which, due to a   different <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalytic_converter" title="Catalytic converter">catalytic converter</a>, produced 310 hp   (229 kW).</p><p>In may <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992" title="1992">1992</a>, the engine displacement was   increased to 3.8 L with the <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_S38" title="BMW S38">S38B38</a>,   except in North America, which continued with the 3.6 L engine. Power was now   increased to 340 hp (250 kW) DIN. Also in 1992, a Touring version was introduced   in LHD form only.</p><p>The M5 came with an unusual wheel design. From 1988-1992 the M5 featured the   M-System wheels. These wheels were 8x17J, but came with a bolted-on wheel cover.   Under the cover was a black 5-spoke alloy wheel. The press was critical of the   design, often claming it gave the M5 the appearance of having &#8220;white-wall&#8221;   tires. In 1992 BMW changed the design and a new cover was produced – the   M-System II. The original intent of the M-System cover was to direct more air to   the brake assembly to increase cooling. The cover actually integrated a fin   assembly behind the cover. The M-System II covers, known as the &#8220;throwing stars&#8221;   did not have as much capability to direct air to the brake assemblies. href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998" title="1998">1998</a> at the <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geneva" title="Geneva">Geneva</a> Motor Show, production did not begin until late   October of that year. A total of 20,482 E39 M5s were made from <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998" title="1998">1998</a> to <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003" title="2003">2003</a>. BMW M   produced three versions of the E39 M5, the European LHD and RHD versions and the   North American specification version.</p><p>The E39 M5 had a highly tuned <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8" title="V8">V8</a> engine based   on the <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M62" title="BMW M62">M62</a> engine called the <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_S62" title="BMW S62">S62</a>, which displaced 4.9 L and produced   400 bhp (294 kW). The engine featured a 7000 RPM redline, Double-<a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VANOS" title="VANOS">VANOS</a>, which varies the intake and exhaust valves for   both cylinder banks, and individual throttle butterflies for each of the   cylinders, allowing for a much faster engine response time.</p><p>All E39 M5s were equipped with a <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Getrag" title="Getrag">Getrag</a> Type D six-speed manual transmission with the   following gearing ratios:</p><p>4.23(1), 2.54(2), 1.62(3), 1.23(4), 1.00(5), 0.83(6)</p><p>It is the same transmission used in the E39 540i but some changes were made   to cope with the extra power the <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_S62" title="BMW S62">S62</a> engine produced. A reinforced clutch, rear differential utilizing a shorter   3.15:1 ratio and a limited slip differential with 25% maximum locking.</p><p>The E39 M5 suspension shared its basic <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium" title="Aluminium">aluminium</a>-intensive <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacPherson_strut" title="MacPherson strut">MacPherson strut</a>/<a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multilink" title="Multilink">multi-link</a> design of the <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8" title="V8">V8</a> E39 5 series. However, several changes were made by BMW   M. Reduced spring height, 0.9 inch (23 mm) lower. A specific shock valving,   thicker front and rear <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sway_bar" title="Sway bar">anti-roll   bars</a>, polyurethane auxilliary springs and steel balljoints.</p><p>Like all V8-powered E39 models, the E39 M5 was equipped with a   recirculating-ball steering system. Overall steering ratio was reduced to 14.7   from 17.9 it featured a servotronic vehicle-speed-sensitive power assist that   provides two levels of resistance controlled via console mounted Sport button.   The E39 M5 is equipped with four-wheel vented <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disc_brakes" title="Disc brakes">disc brakes</a> measuring 13.6&#8243; in diameter in front   and 12.9&#8243; in diameter in the rear. On European-specification models, the front   rotors are of a &#8220;floating&#8221; two-piece design for better heat dissipation. <a

href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004" title="2004">2004</a>. It has   a naturally aspirated 5.0 L BMW <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V10_engine" title="V10 engine">V10</a> <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_S85" title="BMW S85">S85</a> engine redlining at 8250 RPM and developing a peak output of 507 PS (373 kW, 500   SAE hp). Other key features include a stiffened aluminum chassis and a 7-speed   SMG III manual transmission. The car weighed the same as the E39 of 1800 kg.</p><p>The BMW M5, along with the new <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M6" title="BMW M6">M6</a>,   were designed to use the new SMG III <a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrohydraulic_manual_transmission" title="Electrohydraulic manual transmission">electrohydraulic manual   transmission</a>. Therefore, they will initially only be offered with this new   transmission. It is daring to touch the top model amongst the Bavarian saloons, namely the M5, and offers now – besides the already known modifications – a „Wide Body“-kit for the king of the 5 Series.</p><p>HAMANN offers its clients three different engine tuning options. The high revving 5-litre V10 with 507 bhp and 520 Nm is limited to 250km/h as standard. By removing the engine limiter, the racy Bavarian can reach top speeds of between 300km/h and 320km/h, depending on the wheel and tyre combination. The second option is made up of a combination of removing the engine limiter and optimising the engine characteristics by reprogramming the standard engine computer. HAMANN manages to tease an additional 30bhp/26kW and 15 Nm out of the V10 engine. The “HM/M +60&#8243; sport kit provides even better performance. The kit is made up of high-performance headers, metallic sports catalytic converters, a sports rear silencer, a sports air filter, an engine map optimisation and the removal of engine restrictions. As the name of the sports kit already suggests, the engine then provides around an additional 60bhp/44kW and can provide an extra 54 Nm of torque, meaning that a notably faster top speed of up to 320km/h can be reached.</p><p>“Standard“ or “wide body?? ?</p><p>HAMANN adorns the exterior of the M5 with aerodynamic components. For example, a front spoiler, which is attached to the standard front spoiler, helps to create greater downforce. Alternatively, this can also be achieved by a new, sportier front spoiler, whose built-in ellipsoid fog lights lend the “face?? of the BMW more character. The sides of the M5 are edged with subtle side sills, which make the saloon appear even more powerful. Characterised by a diffusor the HAMANN rear panel with cut-out for the HAMANN 4-pipe-rear silencer teem with sportiness. The roof is crowned by a roof spoiler, which also helps to ensure that the M5 remains firmly on the road at high speeds. Further downforce is generated by the rear spoiler that is harmoniously integrated into the vehicle contours. Who prefers race car-like optics, can order the twin-rear spoiler instead. More dynamic than the standard-fitted mirrors are the sports mirrors offered by HAMANN for all left-hand drive cars, which are electrically adjustable and heated, and optionally also electrically folding. All parts, except the front apron, HAMANN offers also in carbon-kevlar.</p><p>Who thinks, a stronger car should leave a stronger mark in the rear mirrors of other road users, can ask HAMANN for the wide body-modification „EDITION RACE“, which extends the vehicle’s body. The HAMANN engineers have certainly done their homework and have given the BMW a sports braking system on the front axle. It is composed of 2 slotted and inside-vented brake discs, 380 mm in diameter and 34 mm thick, 2 HAMANN eight-piston fixed calliper brakes in red (other colours are of course available on request), special brake pads, flexible steel brake pipes and adaptors, plus the complete fastening hardware. Needless to say, HAMANN also offers sets of shims and anti-theft systems with lockable wheel bolts for the rims.</p><p>The tuning specialist from Laupheim also offers various accessories for the M5. For instance, by fitting an interior set made from carbon for the dashboard and centre console, customers can add a touch of racing car atmosphere to their cockpits. This effect is augmented by various aluminium components. For example, HAMANN offers a driver’s footrest made from this light metal, a hand brake lever and the complete set of pedals to match. An exclusive set of floor mats bearing the HAMANN logo in silver is also part of the interior range. Needless to say, HAMANN will also customise any M5 according to each customer’s specific requests.
