Dennett’s lecture “From Animal to Person,” was a quick summary of the evolution of life from single-celled organisms to human beings. As a species, our crowning achievement was the ability to use cultural evolution instead of biological change as a primary source of adaptation. In a little more than 200,000 years, cultural evolution caused humans to change from an insignificant primate scraping by in competition with the Neanderthals into a position of dreadful power now being wielded over the entire planet.
