Mister Mark, Miss Sarah, Miss Nicole, and I were to spend Saturday last tubing on some mild rapids. I was invited by Mrs. Kathryn and Mrs. Erin, amazing friends from the College Days. We were to have Kielbasa until the cows came home, and Mark and I would be able to experience Ulysses’ Siren by virtue of witnessing all our beautiful friends frolicking happily in a river in Maryland.
It was never to be.
Firstly, Mark’s flight from Charleston was bumped. Secondly, Sarah’s phone didn’t work reliably. Thirdly, I had forgotten Sarah’s land line number. Fourthly, we weren’t as motivated as we could have been.
I went to Eastern Market to get some joe and my mail at the PO. Sat and had my Americano. Read some of my mail; glanced over some magazines; stopped by the Sweet Shoppe, ordered a Reuben, ate it.
Glanced at my watch: 12:30. Called Nicole to tell her that I couldn’t find our driver and that we might be late. By the time I got to Chez Connerley, there was no one to be found, save the Toyota 4Runner and the taunting sound of silence.
Called Nicole and she took it in stride. Normal. She asked if I had been to the International Spy Museum and I had not. We planned to meet right away.
My right away was 40-minutes longer than Nicole’s. She waited patiently for me at the Starbucks near the Archives. She was gorgeous and a sight for sore eyes.
I ordered a trippio espresso and girded my loins before we pressed ourselves towards the ISM. In no rush, we stopped at a garish gallery, featuring a light doggie motif. I proclaimed the gallery ‘best of breed’ before again hitting the streets. We arrived at the museum, Our original date idea was shared by an entire city block of other crazy silly Saturday afternoon Romantics as well.
Suffice-it-to-say, we made other plans.
