We geeks make fun of Google for churning out silly applets and toys. Well, they’re neither applets nor toys. Google is making all the stuff we want; Google’s coding for our pleasure.
The only reason why Google floats all of these widgets so early and so raw is because the key to their success lies in thinking, making, releasing, and then seeing how we use these toys.
Coders and scientists tend to be too attached to their initial vision and hypothesis they lost site of what the end user wants and needs.
Google releases early and then builds and integrates — tailors — its tool into our tools. Gmail, Docs & Spreadsheets, Homepage, Reader, Video, Maps, Earth, Groups, Blogsearch, Desktop, Maps, News, Picasa, Calendar, Blogger, Talk, API, Froogle, Adsense, Adwords, and the list goes on.
I mean, Google Labs rocks (I can’t even list all the apps in the pipeline!).
My competitive advantage is that I use of Google Apps for Your Domain for all my branded email.
These Google applications are always becoming more of what we want, and they’re also becoming more tied into each other. At some point soon, there will be a Google harmonic convergence.
I am sorry that Orkut didn’t work outside of Brazil, guys. And when Google Video all but died, thank goodness for $1.65 billion dollars of Google stock because now Google Video can be rolled into YouTube and all is well in the world.
