Even though the Times pans it, I think I will love Against the Day.
I am a fan of Pynchon, discovering him in the form of V a post-war American literature seminar at UEA.
The book didn’t take at first and ultimately took 5-years for me to get through. Every time I stopped short and put it down, I had to start from the beginning.
Then, on to Gravity’s Rainbow. And, of course, The Crying of Lot 49
, which is where I would start, if I were you. Great read, great start, and a great Pynchon primer.
Vineland was a flop and, although Mason & Dixon
was critically acclaimed, it just didn’t titillate me.
Okay, it lost me, primarily because I didn’t give a shit about that timeplace in history, so as I look over to my bookshelf at the first edition copy of M&D, I feel a little guilty, but not as guilty I feel about never having finished Infinite Jest, even though I spent a devoted year to it. 2/3rd.
Don’t tell anyone, I don’t care to be judged.
