Fuel Saving Driving Tips from Click and Clack of Car Talk

Enjoy Car Talk’s Guide to Better Fuel Economy: Driving Tips! Of course, I follow none of these rules. I blame the car. She loves to go!

Use regular gas instead of premium – even if your car demands premium, use regular and let your knock sensor do its job and retard the timing; slow down – every 5 MPH you drive over 60 MPH you’re paying an additional $0.21 per gallon for gas; don’t linger in low gears – Getting into the highest gear you can, at the lowest possible speed, will save you plenty of gas; don’t try to increase your speed when climbing a hill – It turns out that accelerating uphill is a fabulous way to burn up enormous amounts of gas…

Anticipate stops and brake less – every time you step on your car’s brakes, you’re wasting gas; dump the roof rack – it’s costing up to 5 percent in MPG; stop your idling – turn off your engine, you’re just burning money; leave heavy objects at home – each 100 pounds in the trunk will reduce your fuel economy by 1 to 2 percent; turn off the AC when it’s not hot out – If you don’t need to run your air conditioner, don’t; and stop and ask directions – just imagine if every guy stopped and asked for directions when he got lost. The US would never import another barrel of oil!
