Stepping Up to the Fitness Plate

by Chris Abraham on 17/07/2006 · 3 comments

In addition to my biking, I have stepped up to my desire to become As Fit As Possible, I have begun to get a morning run in — before the heat comes rolling in.

The finaly step will be to add daily rows to the routine. This morning was a paltry 3-miler. I am not yet fit enough to maintain my daily four.

Good for you, Chris! Though you shouldn’t run *every* day–3-4 days a week is all your joints should be putting up with. 5+ days is going to be bad news in the long term if not the short…

Now, if you could tell my iliotibial band to cut it out and stop getting so darned excited every time I run 6 miles or more, I’d greatly appreciate it. I’m buying stock in ibuprofen…train on!

Although I would like to think I will run 7-days-a-week, I am sure I won’t… I am sure I won’t even run 4-days-in-a-row… So my knees will be fine based on my natural laziness.

A bit of tempered realism is always a good thing. However, I wouldn’t run four days in a row, either–I’d try Mon-Tues and Thurs-Fri. Having Wednesday off makes you feel spoiled and gives your muscles a chance to recover. Plus, running no more than two days in a row seems much less daunting (which increases the likelihood that you’ll follow such a schedule, loose though it may be).

However, don’t be surprised if you really do become addicted to it. I never thought I’d use any word with positive connotations to describe running, but if you manage to do it three times a week for a month, you’ll be a happy addict.

Especially with your known-to-be-addictive personality. ;)

Sorry for the enthusiasm… I
