This is a fine missive from Francesca as she reports the exciting details of Rally Pigeon (also called Face-Off by some), much better than my reportage. I would call him a Hometeam Pigeon.
Detroit has Octopi, the Caps have Pigeons!
A pigeon to be exact.
For the second game night in a row, a pigeon, apparently a resident of the old MCI Center/new Verizon Center rafters, has ventured out to meet the fans and join in on the fun on the ice! Monday’s appearance during the Islanders game was kept to just some flying exercises and the occasional stop on top on the crowd-protective end nettings.
Wednesday’s venture during the Pittsburgh Penguins visit was quite different—the pigeon wanted to play! After a nice stare-down with the zamboni during first intermission, the Rally Pigeon (as Caps fans are calling the bird on the Caps Fan Forum) decide he wanted to give captain Jeff Halpern a break and was ready to take a face-off.
Several in fact.
Fixated on the rink’s red dots—the bird only moved when confronted with big Olie Kolzig’s stick, or that other bird at the other net, Pittsburgh’s goaltender Sebastien Caron.
Oh yeah, and breakout by our #8 Alexander “The Great??? Ovechkin. Needless to say, two wins in the bag for the Caps and ownership agrees—the pigeon stays!
