Explaining High College Tuition to the Naive

For those of you who do not already recognize the situation for what it is, the reason why top-rated colleges and universities are charging $41,000-a-year is twofold.

One, because they can, the market can easily bear the fee. Two, to exclude the riff-raff without being called out for being classist or exclusionary.

With endowments over $10B, none of the top-ten colleges and universities need undergraduate tuition.

In a world where you can no longer keep out people based on class, race, gender, or religion, the pickings are pretty slim on how you can keep out the undesireables.

And if you are desireable, there is always plenty of money, called Financial Aid, that can make everything all right.

Thankfully, there is still cold, hard, cash.

“Maybe if you can’t afford it you really don’t belong here,” so to speak.
