I decided that my blog articles need a little more je ne sais quoi and that requires writing more of myself into its “pages.” Taking Writing the Personal Essay with Natalie Wexler every Saturday from 1:30-4 for the next four Satudays is what I feel I need.
The class is smart and savvy and talented. The Writer’s Center is an amazing little gem of a secret.
Its really tweedy and serious and attracts writers and not poseurs. I hate to admit it but the Writer’s Center isn’t nearly as sexy as the McFA offered by Johns Hopkins but I believe it to be more authentic.
Why? Because there is nothing at stake, there is nothing at the end — no carrot — except becoming a better writer. And in degree and pedigree-obsessed Washington, DC, there are few things that people do just for the love of the game.
The Writer’s Center pledges allegiance to the Republic of Letters.
As The Writer’s Center expands its online offerings over time, I hope that more and more of you who live and write outside the Beltway will take advantage of the Writer’s Center.
For now if you want to enjoy the Writer’s Center and you live well away from Bethesda, Washington, Virginia or Maryland, you can look at a course in Creative Fiction and Creative Nonfiction via the Internet.
Definition of Republic of Letters: Community of intellectuals in the eighteenth century. In the 18th century, intellectuals consisted of a vague, spiritual territory. Such authors remained scattered through society, without a clear professional identity.
