OMG! Cats is one of the BEST MUSICALS EVER! you obviously have never seen it and have no idea on what great theatre is. THE RUM TUM TUGGER IS A CURIOUS CAT!

I know that “THE RUM TUM TUGGER IS A CURIOUS CAT!” is not a line found anywhere in great theatre.

I think the reason hate this musical is because they don’t understand it. The plot is simple, and for some too simple, but research why T.S. Elliot wrote the poems and then it makes it much more sentimental and likeable. Plus it is a Webber classic and has a great flow of well written music and unexpected chords!

I don’t think so. I think the interpretation of “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” was what was simplistic. The only reason you like cats is because you like TS Eliot. Eliot is a genius, obviously, and The Waste Land is probably one of the most important works of poetry ever produced in English. The only reason you like Cats is because it reminds you of other, more intellectual, things. I am not just a hater. I love Hair and Les Miserables, for example. I do hate Cats and Starlight Express, for example.

I am curious, how do interpret the poetry and the way it was made into the musical? What is it about to you? You were slightly incorrect i am not a huge fan of Eliot infact most of his genius was in his darker and deeper poetry and frankly i do not enjoy having to decifer a meaning from pages and pages of poetry. Which is why i am so drawn to these light and almost child like poetry.

Perhaps some of the problem with CATS is not the poetry. But, the music. It is unexpected(as someone already mentioned) it is also written for a choral sound different then that of hair, les mis, starlight express, Phantom, Evita….. it isn’t sung to be a beuatiful sound. Yes simplistically the chords tune and all the correct notes and lines are carried through in performance. BUt, it is an opera and not one in which everyone has the same british accent and pure vowels. Tha choral sound in all productions is not in itself bad but just not Webber.
I don’t know just a thought!

I love musicals! I love Les Misérables, The Sound of Music, Camelot, Oklahoma, Evita, West Side Story, Mamma Mia!, A Chorus Line, Chicago, Grease, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello, Dolly!, My Fair Lady, Cabaret, Annie, South Pacific, Hair, Auntie Mame, The Sound of Music, The King and I, Guys and Dolls, Damn Yankees, and Jesus Christ Superstar. But, I don’t like RENT, Phantom or the Opera, or Starlight Express. Sorry.

Goodness…you all are awful success in musical theatre does not hinge on liking cats….I have played all sorts of roles and been really successful in my career and still don’t particularly like the show… I have played two roles in Cats and had fun both times (plus the pay check was good)but my directors were well aware that several in the cast it wasn’t a favorite, and the same director cast me as Sarah in Guys and Dolls. I love musicals and music in general, and i respect webber for all of his work….but opinion doesn’t effect how far i am and will go in theatre…. It is just a different side to a favorite composer… Food for thought…

P.s. Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite shows of all time and i have played Christine twice…. If you love Cats more power to you and it is a good show…but hardly the best in Musical theatre….

well the play was bad in some ways. to me, it was just another annoying play. Really don’t take it from me! i just don’t like plays or musicals that much. but if i were to say. they need better costumes.
