Does Oprah Profit from James Frey’s Success?

by Chris Abraham on 26/01/2006 ·

James Frey is now a household name because of A Million Little Pieces thanks to Oprah Winfrey, mostly due to this afternoon’s dressing down.

I would like to know if Oprah Winfrey has any interest in the financial success of this book. As a marketer, I think this dressing down of James Frey is inspired sales strategy worthy of a Nobel Prize in Economics.

A colleague is taking odds on James Frey’s suicide directly resulting from this interview and Oprah’s dressing down.

What would be a harsher moral outrage? The intentional mislabelling of a fictional account as memoir or driving a recovering alcoholic and drug addict to drugs, alcohol, or worse, suicide.

At the end of the day, James Frey is a survivor, is an amazing role model for success and recovery, and is a brilliant writer — nobody disagrees that A Million Little Pieces is a brilliant read.

And he is an ex con, an alcoholic, and a drug addict.

And how naive is Oprah Winfrey anyway?

And does he have a financial interest? Is she in collusion?

Now is a good time to take it to the next level and do a little bit fisking on this issue..
