Humble Kukui Nut Goes Haute CoutureAll the cool chicks are wearing kukui nut leis, bracelets, and chokers. I think they’re expensive around here. Growing up in Hawai`i, the kukui nut lei was casually ubiquitous. Don’t get gouged, buy your kukui nut jewelry from the source, the Waikiki ABC Store, ground zero for aloha oi.

The humble kukui nut, also known as the candlenut, was originally used for its oil, which one can burn for light. The anclient Hawaiians used kukui nut oil as lamp fuel.

A simple kukui lei is traditionally given as a gift to visitors.

“The kukui nut tree has spiritual significance of hope and renewal, and was involved in many legends. One such was about a woman who, despite her best efforts to please her husband, was routinely beaten. Finally, the husband beat her to death and buried her under a kuku’i tree. Being a kind and just woman, she was given new life, and the husband was eventually killed.”

Via Wikipedia.

“The Kukui or Candlenut tree (Aleurites moluccana L.) is the state tree of Hawai’i and the symbol of the `Aha Kupuna, the Council of Elders of the Nation of Hawaii. Native to Southeast Asia, it was apparently brought to the islands by early Polynesian settlers.”

They’re all over the runway gang! And every NYC vendor seems to be selling them too. Glad to hear they have such a history!
