Satellite phones, the likes of which we mocked when Iridium went bankrupt, are the answer to this problem: “emergency first responders need a mobile, wireless system that allows them to talk to one another in times of crisis anywhere in the country.”
According to the Post, “With Hurricane Rita bearing down on the Texas coast, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin J. Martin said yesterday that the nation’s emergency first responders need a mobile, wireless system that allows them to talk to one another in times of crisis anywhere in the country.”
Well, when I sailed from Acapulco to LA, we met loads of full-time cruisers. They all had satellite phones. Sounds like a solution to me.
Why in the hell do we need to reinvent the wheel?
