Men in DC generally have a discrete lover tucked away somewhere. I call this woman number one wife. The term comes from polygamy where there are many wives but only one favored wife. Until that magic moment when the DC man walks into a room and falls for the one, number one wife isn’t going anywhere. The DC man can easily make happy hour, hit the gym, hang out with the boys, go on a date, and then – smoky and a little drunk – go over to number one wife, have sex, and then fall asleep under the covers. Warm, comfortable, and snuggly together – totally at ease and fully accepting.
If number one wife doesn’t become wife number one, then she is often the second wife because this relationship was always based on mutual acceptance, making it durable. Love is messy. The relationship with number one wife readily survived all the common things that absolutely derail marriages.
