Off Road Rack v. Underground Parking Garage

rack thumb Off Road Rack v. Underground Parking GarageI said, “Cris, I can barely fit into the garage at work as it is.” He responded with, “nah, its not that tall, it’ll be fine.” This morning, the garage won.

No damage, and my friend Jon helped me remove it into the truck, but you should have seen the fiasco in the garage this morning. With the Old Man Emu suspension and the natural tallness of the Disco anyway, I am a short, narrow, but tall bloody ride.

The Discovery I is the first model of the modern Land Rover Discovery. Unlike the Discovery II and the L3, the Discovery I is shorter and narrower than the new vehicles, harkening back to the days when Land Rovers actually needed to be narrow for singletrack as well as European and English streets.

They have subsequently acquired the American Spread, as have the Land Cruisers and Jeeps.

Cris Ellington sold me my favorite thing, my 1997 Land Rover Discovery SD. Yesterday he gave me a Widerness Off Road rack that is out of Africa.

I drove out to Charles Town, WV, to visit with Cris yesterday. I got to visit his golf course abutting beautiful new home, his cool boys and his lovely wife. Very cool kids, very cool place. And a new navy blue Saab 95 to replace is true love, his — now my — Disco.

I also received the biggest compliment that I could ever have imagined from Cris, the true parent of this truck, “I was very happy to see the Discovery in good hands.”
