The Well Turns 20 Today

Happy birthday to the Well. Although the Well’s 20th birthday is today, TMN celebrated its 20th last year.

I had forgotten that TMN was the Well\’s older brother.

It is all relative, isn\’t it? I have been on TMN off and on since 1993, and off and on the Well since 1996. I have been part of Brainstorms since 1999. Oh what fun.

I spent most of my youth on TMN but was on the Well as well. The Well is 20. TMN is 21. Yes, that does make me exceedingly proud. I really should spend more time visiting TMN as well as Brainstorms. Two of the best Virtual Communities on the Internet. The Well as well of course. My email address is from my days on the Well. Drop me a line.

  1. The WELL turns 20, and expands services Inbox

Twenty years is a significant chunk of any human lifetime. It’s an
especially long epoch in dog-years or in online time. Incredibly,
The WELL is turning 20 this week. We’re celebrating by making
some changes in our service offerings, and by partying together
online and off. First, here are our new service announcements!

Announcing WELL Webmail for Complete members: Want to keep up
with email while traveling, or store it off your desktop machine? All
WELL email accounts can now be accessed at our Webmail facility. Come to
our home page and select the new “Mail” link in the top navigation.
If you like, you can use WELL Webmail to pick up email from your other
    accounts, too. Try it!

Now store 100 MB at The WELL: Has space been the final frontier for
you? We’re excited to announce that as of April 1, 2005, Complete plan
storage goes from 10 MB to 100 MB included. One hundred megabytes
is yours for your combined Web pages, saved files in your home directory
and email in your home directory or on the new Webmail box. Do you go over
the storage allotment now and then for special purposes? We don’t
block your uploads by setting a quota. You will still be able to use
more storage for a fee if you wish, but we suspect 100 MB will give you
    some serious breathing space.

We’re giving the top of http://www.well.com a makeover! I’d like to thank
Paul Bissex and Fleur Helsingor, along with Salon’s designer Mignon
Khargie, plus hundreds of astute users for months of sharp comments.
We are phasing in a more modern site design. Have a look, and then drop
by the Web conference to give your feedback.

Are you enjoying Salon Premium? We’ve noticed that many WELL members
haven’t yet set up their complimentary Premium membership. Do it today
to read the award-winning Salon.com without ads and get other great
benefits. Just log into our Billing Information Center to set up your
Premium membership here at https://www.well.com/billing and review your
    contact information too.

Celebrate the 20th anniversary all April, online and off: From a reunion
in the WELLtales conference to an Inkwell.vue conversation among
pioneers Howard Rheingold, Cliff Figallo and friends; from a contest
for the best WELL salute (or parody) to face-to-face parties and
activities, this April is time to reconnect and explore. Check out
the list of events at http://www.well.com/twenty/ and enjoy.

Do you have friends who’d get a lot out of The WELL, have a lot
to offer WELL people, or both? Here’s a chance to offer them our best
introductory rate at this link for friends of WELL members. Send them to
http://www.well.com/twenty/ so they can set up an account, take a look
around and test the waters for up to two months for a $2 set-up fee.

There are still more than sixty members who have been continuously
registered at The WELL since 1985! Whether you are one of these
pioneers of online culture or brand new explorer around the
conferences, the members of the staff of The WELL and Salon Media salute
    you.

Personally, the most recent 15 years of the saga have been an honor and
quite a ride for me. Thank you. I’m happy to say that there’s more to
come, and that you are the most important part of it all.

    To the next 20 years.
