Looking for the Perfect Digital Voice Recorder

Panasonic.jpgMy friend Peter Suber has a Panasonic RR-QR240 digital voice recorder that he loves and uses every day and that I quite liked as well. They don’t make this model any more and I am looking for something similar. The obvious major players are Olympus and Sony, but I am sure the perfect thing exists for me, even if it ends up being a used RR-QR240.

Why I Want a DVR:
The student and her little dog too suggested it was a good idea for the same reason Peter Suber uses his: a quick way to collect ideas; to remember tasks; to schedule reminders; to remember names; to note place names and dates and times to help with slide-labelling; to brainstorm blogging, essay, and novel ideas; to schedule meetings; and not get killed in a major automobile accident.

Why I Need a DVR
No, I am not just getting another toy, Justin. Many of these brainstorms happen during drive time. Especially now, when I spend so much time on the road between DC and NC. I have been thumbing notes, tasks, and ideas into my Blackberry, but doing that on the Interstate is likely to shorten my life.

I Value Your Advice and Recommendation
If anyone has any advice or suggestions, here is what I need:

  • Light and easy to pocket (the RR-QR240 has this in spades)
  • Basically dictation only — no requirements for songs or lectures
  • Short voice notations, preferably broken into files
  • Ability to sort audio files into folders: essay, tasks, novel, photo, schedule, etc.
  • Possible way of turning voice-to-text
  • Easy connection to PC via USB

I would love any hints. In addition, I will be doing some research and intend to share my process as well as my ultimate decision with you when I make it, along with the contenders.

    1. Sorry can’t help Chris but would love to know what you decide on in the end… we use the most horrific high-end solution possible (Maycoms handheld recorders: http://www.maycom.nl/main.html) and I’d love to identify some good alternatives.

      Cheers, James
