I really love GMail and have been trying to convince everyone to at least give it a go. If you want one, send me an email and I will oblige.
What makes it different? Well, the entire metaphor is different. The normal email account stores mail in chronological order, and we are used to that. GMail, on the other hand, organizes mail by conversation. A little like USENET/Newsgroup/BBS/Forum/Message Board threads. The subject is the topic and the conversation going on between you and your recipient is the thread. Optionally, you can view the messages traditionally. Additionally, GMail encourages you to not delete but to archive your messages, allowing you to really start building a repository of correspondence conversations that are easily searchable via Google’s powerful search engine.
Why is it better? Well, of course it has offers a free account with a one gigabyte mailbox. It offers out-of-the-box POP3 access to the account, free forwarding, and a downloadable new mail alert tool. Many of these tools are premiums with Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail.
It used to be that GMail didn’t support all browsers but now it has an clean HTML interface so you can access it anywhere.
